Brooke's Page about Africa
1. What is the weather like in the dry parts of the Sahara?
The weather in the Sahara is very hot. In the summer the weather can get up to 90 degrees and in the winter it will be around 50 degrees. It is also very dusty and dry. Sometimes in the winter there is a strong wind that is dry, dusty and blows things around, and this is called a harmatten.

2. How do you think a Tuareg's life might be different from that of someone who lives along the Nile?
The Tuareg people have to carry their goods very far distances, and they have to use their natural resources. They live on the edge of the Sahara and live in villages. People who live by the Nile River depend on the river to get water for their crops and use the water from the River to irrigate their fields.

3. In what ways do people react to environmental conditions in different areas of the Sahara? In what ways are people trying to control their environment?
Cattle graze in fields and they use irrigation for their fields.

4. Why do farmers use irrigation?
Because the land is very dry, and dusty, and their crops wouldn't grow without it because it hardly ever rains. The Sahara actually used to have more water and wasnt as dry, but over time they had many dry periods and eventually the rivers dried up, and it has been very dry ever since.

5. Why do dams affect farming?
The dams will rise and go onto the fields and cause flooding. They can also sometimes help the crops that are being grown by giving them water.

6. How is the land changing in the Sahel?

It often has a lot more rain than the other parts of Africa, but it usually only rains in the summer so the rest of the year they aren't able to grow as many crops. Scientists think that the land is changing from being able to use the land to it changing to into a desert. This is called desertification. Many people are trying to stop this from happening by planting plants and trees.

Chapter 2- The Savanna
How is the savanna different from the Sahara? Describe its location.
The Savanna is differnt because it has a lot more grass and the Sahara is a lot more dry. It rains for a few months in the Savanna and then is dry for the rest of the year.
2.How do both herbivores and carnivores depend on the savanna?
The herbivores depend on the grass to be green in order to eat it and survive, and the carnivores need the savanna and the praire so they can catch the herbivores.
3.Why are so many countries joining their national parks together?
This way animals will be able to be free between two parks or countires.
4.How are national parks sometimes a problem for people of the savanna? In what ways do they help people of the savanna?
They are a problem because then many people don't have anywhere to farm and plant crops. It helps people because then they have jobs and they can save the animals from poachers.
5.How does sustainable development help people and animals in Kruger National Park in South Africa?
It helps people to improve their quality of life and recycling and re-using your resources.
